Rumored Spyshot: Will the Next iPhone Be Taller Than Its Predecessors?

An alleged leak of fourth-gen iPhone components claims to tell us two things about Apple's next creation. One, it's taller. Two, part of its surface is "reflective."

What iResQ claims to be the next iPhone case sits on the right in our lead shot, alongside the iPhone 3GS' front assembly.

It's 1/4 of an inch taller. Boom?

Plus, the top lip of the case has a "reflective, mirror-like surface," which iResQ assumes is a rearrangement of the iPhone's proximity sensor (the component that notices when your face is near the phone).

No component leak is all that reliable unto itself, given that it's not very difficult to manufacture a knockoff plastic case...and stirring up publicity isn't exactly bad for an iPhone repair shop (the source of the leak). Still, the idea of a slightly taller iPhone? Fine with me, assuming the extra footprint is put to good use. (But even if it wasn't, would any of us notice this slight difference?)     Like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, some claimed fourth generation iPhone parts have emerged from the corn fields business district of Olathe, Kansas. The supposed parts arrived at iResQ, an iPhone repair shop, and include a front panel which iResQ notes is 1/4 inch taller than the iPhone 3GS. This small increase in size could potentially translate into an iPhone with a 3.7 inch display, a size which is fast becoming the industry standard. Bad news for those that are hard on their phone and tend to break not just the glass but the LCD panels underneath, as the LCD is reportedly glued to the digitizer and must be replaced together as an all-in-one unit. We don’t need to remind you that this dual-pieced part may cost a small arm and leg to replace. Last but not least, make sure your Martini glass is lined with a bit of salt as you’ll need those extra white granules while reading the unconfirmed contents of this post.

  • Is this the face of the iPhone 4G?
    There's very little to go on at this point, just a series of photos posted to a forum by a device repair company, but if their suspicions are correct, this could be the front panel of the presumably upcoming "iPhone 4G." iResQ claims to have obtained the sample part from a "reputable source" that has provided genuine parts to it in the past, parts which iResQ uses for repairing products -- even if those products don't exist yet. Interestingly, the LCD is factory glued to the digitizer on this 4G wannabe (like on the original iPhone), as opposed to them being separate elements on the 3G and 3GS, meaning higher replacement costs. But most notable about this face part is the fact that it's roughly 1/4-inch taller than previous generations. Your guess is as good as ours as to why it's taller, since the screens themselves seems very similarly sized. We're also incredibly curious as to whether this here face would line up with that supposed 4G midboard we saw a little while ago. So, elaborate scam by iResQ to get its name up in lights? Prank played by a fun-loving parts supplier? Earth shattering iPhone form factor change unearthed? And just what is that "reflective surface" supposed to be for? Beats us.
